Sliver of A Full Moon
Presented by DVS
A special screening of Sliver of a Full Moon in honor and observance of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Sliver of a Full Moon is a powerful production that shines light on the fight to include protections for Native women in the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA).
Two Spirits interweaves the tragic story of a mother’s loss of her son with a revealing look at the largely unknown history of a time when the world wasn’t simply divided into male and female and many Native American cultures held places of honor for people of integrated genders.
StrongHearts Native Helpline 1-844-7NATIVE (762-8483) is a safe domestic, dating and sexual violence helpline for American Indians and Alaska Natives, offering culturally-appropriate support and advocacy daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. CT. Anonymous and confidential.

Tribal-State-Federal Judicial Forum
The first Tribal State Court Forum, which was created in 1992, resulted in the creation of the “Enforcement of Tribal Judgments” court rule, MCR 2.615, and, most recently, the passage of the Michigan Indian Family Preservation Act of 2012 (MIFPA). Fostering continuing good relations between our state and tribal courts is of great interest to this Court.
On March 7, 2013, President Obama signed into law the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2013, or “VAWA 2013.” VAWA 2013 recognizes tribes’ inherent power to exercise “special domestic violence criminal jurisdiction” (SDVCJ) over certain defendants, regardless of their Indian or non-Indian status, who commit acts of domestic violence or dating violence or violate certain protection orders in Indian country.
Oliphant v. Suquamish Indian Tribe
In 1978, the United States Supreme Court ruled that Indian tribal courts do not have inherent criminal jurisdiction to try and to punish non-Indians, and hence may not assume such jurisdiction unless specifically authorized to do so by Congress.
National Network to End Domestic Violence
The National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) was founded more than 25 years ago to be the leading voice for survivors of domestic violence and their allies.
